Microscopy image of a mycorrhizal fungus
Microscopy image of a mycorrhizal fungus that forms a symbiotic partnership with plant roots. The hyphal filaments (blue and green lines in image) act as pipes to carry nutrients through the soil. A considerable amount of plant-derived carbon is stored in the reproductive spores (small spheres in the image) of the fungus.
False color added for contrast.
