Former AMOLF PhD student Sander Mann has received an NWO Rubicon award to do research at the CUNY Advanced Science Research Center in New York. Mann obtained the cum laude degree for his doctorate research in the Nanoscale Solar Cells group led by Erik Garnett.

Research topic
In New York Mann intends to study: A one-way street for heat. Everything that absorbs light must be able to emit light as well. This is often undesirable: in solar panels, for example, emission leads to a lower yield. We will develop special surface coatings which ensure that a material can absorb light without emitting it.

About Rubicon
21 researchers who have recently received their PhDs can do their research at foreign research institutes thanks to a Rubicon grant from NWO. The Rubicon program gives young, highly promising researchers the opportunity to gain international research experience.
