A multi-analytical approach is presented to determine the organic and inorganic composition of gilding samples that have a multi-material and multi-layered structure. The effectiveness of the combination of mass spectrometric methods to identify organic materials and molecular imaging to localise organic constituents is explored by a detailed characterisation of the materials used in three the art technical and historical context of gilding.
