Abstract
Solar energy can sustain our future global energy demand. Next to crystalline silicon, various thin film photovoltaic technologies, based on organic and hybrid materials, are emerging. Organic semiconductors with extended absorption and high charge carrier mobility provide efficiencies up to 12%. The effect of the morphology on the generation, separation, and collection of photogenerated charge carriers will be highlighted. The efficiency of organic solar cells can be further enhanced in multi-junction device architectures and progress towards higher efficiencies will be addressed. Recently, perovskites are emerging as a serious alternative in terms of power conversion efficiency (> 20%) and being based on cheap and simple materials. Also for perovskites the morphology of the active layer is crucial to the performance.
