Scientific Internship: Crystal Structures by Design

Can we program particles to self-assemble into regular crystal structures by properly designing the interactions between these particles? This is a question that belongs to a novel class of inverse problems in statistical physics: instead of asking which equilibrium states a given set of interparticle interactions gives rise to, we ask whether we can design the interactions to achieve a desired state. Our group is developing a novel approach to this question which exploits the interplay between the structure of the crystal lattice (hexagonal, square, etc.) and the symmetries of the target patterns. In this internship, you will build on this idea by applying it to a number of test cases, both using an analytical approach involving lattice approximations, group theory and bifurcation theory and computer simulations.

About the group

The Theory of Biomolecular Matter group focusses on using the tools of statistical physics and continuum mechanics on understanding the properties of living matter, but is also interested in developing fundamental techniques in statistical physics and stochastic processes.

Qualifications

Formal reuirements: You have a Bachelors degree in physics, chemistry or biology and participate in a Master study in one of these areas. The internship must be a mandatory part of your curriculum. You have a nationality of an EU-member state and/or you are a student at a Netherlands University. You must be available for at least 9 months. We are looking for an enthusiastic student with a background in theoretical physics and a broad and adventurous outlook. Experience with symbolic calculation in Mathematica would be helpful (but not a prerequisite).

At the start of the traineeship your trainee plan will be set out, in consultation with your AMOLF supervisor.
