Salt crystallization in confinement

Date 11 February 2019 Time 11:00 - 12:00
Location AMOLF Lecture Room
Speaker Noushine Shahidzadeh (University of Amsterdam)
Category Public Colloquium

Salts crystallization is important for many processes, and more often than not, crystallization happens in confinement: in drops, thin films, or within porous media such as soils or stones. I will show that the crystallization in confinement of very common salts such as NaCl can be very different from bulk crystallization; the impact on supersaturation, crystallization pressure and salt creeping will be discussed.

I will in particular focus on the disastrous effects salt crystallization can have on the conservation of cultural heritage such as buildings, frescoes and stone statues.
